We toured Winnebago County in north central Illinois. This trip has it all: campgrounds, hills, countryside, rivers, beautiful parks, and a dash of urban scenery, all ninety miles west of Chicago. This three-night bike overnight with two full days of riding made a perfect shakedown tour before our tour around Lake Michigan.
We set out early one Saturday in June, despite the dismal weather report that promised afternoon thunderstorms. The train brought us to our first trail, the Old Plank Road Trail, in short order. We were underway. The Old Plank Road Trail is nicely paved and dead flat, so we covered the 20 miles to Joliet quickly, stopping only to fill up on coffee and breakfast in Frankfort.
People always ask me how many bikes I have. Right now, it’s the bare minimum. Three. When I follow that answer with something like, “Well, one of them is my touring bike,” I get all nostalgic and guilty because I haven’t put in the miles on that sucker that I should. I’ve logged a few thousand miles on my Long Haul Trucker, on everything from rando-style road rides to a month-long hump down the Pacific Coast. But here in Chicago, it’s tough.
