An impromptu overnight trip south of Kansas City, MO with a focus not on the destination, but on smoothing over the jagged edges of a loss with bike travel.
Cruising the Prairie Spirit Trail, a rail-trail in Kansas from Ottawa to Iola, KS. Enjoy this flat, quiet, and beautiful journey through farmland and small town USA.
The adventure: Leave from Family Bicycles in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday. Ride northwest, crossing the Kansas River, and then head north to Leavenworth, Kansas. Visit an educational retreat and organic farm that also has camping, then head east, riding across the Missouri River and camping at Weston Bend State Park. Then ride back to Kansas City on Sunday.
Winter had stayed too long; although I had been active -- walking, hiking, cross-country skiing, and cycling for transportation -- I had not been bike touring. I felt the need to do something that would pare the fat off the soul, and maybe even scare the **** out of me. Even though the adventure was going to be only about 90 miles round trip and close to home, the bike with gear weighed 60-plus pounds and we were taking a route I had never been on. So, my imagination wandered, but I was ready for the new adventure.
"What was I thinking? I must be insane! Why did I think I could do this? You don't do these kind of things! Other people do this, you freaking idiot!" These were just a few of the choice thoughts running through my head on June 29, 2013, as I left familiar cycling territory while embarking on my first attempted overnight bike trip. The plan was to ride from my home in Overland Park, Kansas, to Clinton State Park, which is just west of Lawrence, Kansas. I had estimated that the trip, which would take me through the communities of DeSoto and Eudora, would require approximately 50 miles, each way, of output from my untried (over this distance, anyway) human power plant. How, at the age of 46, had I arrived at this point in my life?
I’m kind of new to the loaded bike touring thing. On October 21-22, 2011, I did a solo overnight in the Flint Hills, an east central section of Kansas that has largely escaped the plow and is tallgrass prairie land with few roads. Big and open. Cattle country. Living in eastern Kansas, I always felt adventure should be here. Loaded touring is a nice way to get it.
Our destination, the historic town of Leavenworth Kansas. Myself and Randy Rasa, of the Kansas Cyclist, were the sojourners. We both rode from our homes to Desoto, Kansas to start our 24 hour adventure together.
