The Tulip Tour: April in Northwest Washington

The wet Pacific Northwest weather this past winter in Portland had made us anxious to get on our bikes again, so Kathy and I planned a spring tulip ride through the colorful fields west of Mount Vernon, Washington.

The bicycling began and ended in Mount Vernon, but we loaded our bikes on Amtrak from Vancouver (Washington) to get to the start.

Luck was on our side the day we hopped on our bikes and rode away from Mount Vernon -- the sun was shining! Our destination for the night, the Edenwild Inn, was 35 miles of biking and a subsequent ferry ride away on Lopez Island.

We pedaled alongside beautiful tulip and daffodil fields, stopping numerous times to inhale the essence of the red, pink, and yellow blooms. (We visited beforehand to find the fields that would be in bloom.)

Our trip took us past still more fields, through the quaint town of LaConner, around Mt. Erie, and onto the ferry bound for Lopez Island.

Our second day began again with the sun warming our backs as we returned to Anacortes by way of the state ferry system. From the deck of the ferry we spotted harbor seals, bald eagles, porpoises, and one large otter. Our destination for this evening was 23 miles away at the LaConner Country Inn.

Day three started in LaConner and took us to back Mount Vernon, just 10 miles away. Unfortunately, the sun didn't wake up when we did; thick, black clouds and gusty crosswinds tortured us all the way back.

But blue skies, blue waters, and faded driftwood are some of the memories we took with us from this great ride.

Tips for this adventure: We recommend dinner at Seeds, a bistro and bar in LaConner; dinner at Love Dog Cafe in Lopez Village; and the Lake Erie Grocery for a quick snack and a drink.
