National Bike Travel Weekend at Indiana’s McCormick’s Creek State Park

Central Indiana Bicycle Association (CIBA) members orchestrated a fully supported camping trip to McCormick’s Creek State Park to share the experience and joy of bicycle travel.

Bicycle Adventurers: This ride was the group effort of CIBA ride leaders Nathan and Kristen Dinges, Danna Korak, and Chris Rito who was generous enough to drive our support vehicle both days for this fully supported adventure. In spite of the stormy weather forecast for Saturday, we had a total of seven cyclists that participated in this two-day ride. Our bike overnight to this Indiana state park brought together a diverse group: one tandem bicycle with a BOB trailer, one road bike, two trikes, and two touring bikes. We turned a lot of curious heads as we rolled into camp.

When: June 4–5, 2016, National Bike Travel Weekend

Accommodations: McCormick’s Creek State Park campground

Distance: This was a two-day, 39-mile casually paced ride from Mooresville, IN to Spencer, IN.

Day One

The trip began under cloudy skies and aside from a few brief showers, the ride was pleasant. It wasn’t until we reached the park entrance when the sky really opened up and we got completely drenched. By this time, the campsite was swamped and the fire ring was filled with water, but that didn’t dampen our spirits.

We pitched our tents, grabbed some dry clothes, and headed to the Canyon Inn, the park’s lodging and dining facility, to dry off and eat supper. As the sun set, we managed to get a campfire going with some tea lights, Kleenex, hand-sanitizer, bug spray, campground map, and a 2016 festival guide, and made an attempt to dry out our shoes while sharing stories around the campfire.

Day Two

The following day was a beautiful ride back to Mooresville, pedaling down country roads, passing through quiet communities, and taking time to be mindful of our surroundings while ensuring no rider was left behind.
